LIFE OF MINE ENGINEERING
PROJECT EXPEREINCE
Leading multi-disciplinary design teams and providing construction support to assist clients in delivering life of mine tailings & mine waste management strategies, from concept to closure. Below are a sample of our project experience.
Client: Fortescue Metals Group
Various tailings and mine waste projects and studies across all FMG mine sites.
Solomon Iron Ore Project:
-
Detailed design of a 70m high embankment dam for valley-type tailings impoundment and associated infrastructure to provide 50 Mm3 tailings storage capacity.
-
Technical support during construction of the cross valley embankment and associated enabling infrastructure.
-
LOM Tailings Management and Closure Planning for the TSF and waste dumps
-
Design development and options evaluation for a proposed 5Mtpa Dry Stacking operation atop existing TSF and at a new Dry Stack storage facility.
North Star Magnetite Project:
-
Detailed design of a 30m high embankment dam for valley-type tailings impoundment and associated infrastructure
-
Design and development of operating plans for WRD and dry rejects (Dry Stack) landforms
-
Closure Planning for the TSF and WRD
Chichester Operations (Christmas Creek & Cloudbreak Iron Ore Mines):
-
Design and construction support for TSF and associated infrastructure, including:
-
(6) Embankment dams (height 15m to 30m, combined length 4,500m)
-
Decant infrastructure,
-
Surface water management features
-
Preparation of tender/construction documents and QA/QC plans
-
Embankment monitoring instrumentation system (design and installation)
-
-
LOM tailings management strategies
-
TSF Closure Plans
Client: South32

-
Life of asset (LOA) planning
-
Geotechnical investigations
-
Design of haul roads and access ramps
-
Design of embankments (upstream, centreline, downstream raises)
-
Stability modelling (inclusive of current raises and final configuration)
-
Design of surface water management structures
-
Design of gravity decants and water management infrastructure
-
Preparation of Design Reports
-
Development of Construction drawings and associated documents
-
CQA monitoring and technical support
Client: Origin Energy
Geotechnical investigation and characterisation of hydraulically placed CCP . Developed future works required to maximise storage capacity for the life of asset, including; geotechnical investigation and material characterisation of hydraulically deposited CCP, performance review of current thickening/deposition system (related to in-situ storage density) and development of options study to increase storage capacity of existing facility. Carried out pre-purchase due diligence review of the ash containment facility and currently serve as independent technical advisor to Origin Energy and the State of NSW Treasury (jointly) for matters related to the Eraring Power Station Ash Dam.
Client: IDEQ/MDEQ/USEPA
East Mission Flats Repository
-
Civil/geotechnical engineering for detailed design of the East Mission Flats (EMF) mine waste storage facility and associated infrastructure in Northern Idaho (Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Site).
-
Operational support and third party auditing for operation of the EMF Repository. Works included: site investigations, monitoring and data evaluation, construction planning, seasonal closure planning (winter closure), preparation of construction completion reports and as built drawings and QA/QC.
Big Creek Repository
-
Civil/geotechnical engineering for the detailed design of the Big Creek Repository (BCR) height and footprint expansion in Northern Idaho (Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Site) . The BCR is an integrated waste landform (IWL) used to store mine waste contaminated soil atop a decommissioned TSF whilst providing a closure solution for the disused TSF.
-
Operational support and third party auditing of the operation of the BCR. Works included: site investigations, monitoring and data evaluation, construction planning, seasonal closure planning (winter closure), preparation of construction completion reports and as built drawings and QA/QC.
Mike Horse TSF
-
Civil/geotechnical engineering for development of tailings removal and storage options related to the remediation and closure of the Mike Horse TSF in Northern Montana (Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex). Works included: field investigation and material sampling, material characterization, options screening, field trials and repository siting.
Basin Repository Programme
Site selection, preliminary civil/geotechnical engineering, and conceptual design of mine waste repositories to support remediation efforts associated with the Bunker Hill CERCLA Superfund site in Northern Idaho. The programme built on previous success using disused TSF as the foundation for mine waste repositories. Conceptual design was carried out for the following sites;
-
Government Gulch Mine Waste Repository
-
Osburn Ponds Repository
-
Hecla/Star Ponds (Burke Canyon) Repository
